Does Doctrine Divide?

Today we are joined by Cody Almanzar, host of The Ordinary Pastor Podcast and pastor of Grace Family Church in Cañon City, Colorado.

We discuss whether doctrine divides:

  • Know What You Believe and Believe It!
  • Freedom of Conscience

The Purpose of Preaching. #Homiletics

Immanuel Marsh joins us to discuss the role of preaching. This might seem like an easy question to answer, but once you get below the surface, it’s a very controversial issue.

We examine many of the unquestioned assumptions that underpin our methodology of preaching.

  • The Role and Purpose of Preaching
  • Is “Life Transformation” Preaching Just Legalism?
  • Worship or Evangelism Service
  • Why Are Millennials Rejecting Terminology?

Bad Homiletics: “What Color Is Your World?” (John 1:6-9)

“The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world.” – John 1:9

This is the first installment of what may become a series, Bad Homiletics. I evaluate a sermon I recently heard preached on John 1:6-9.

You may recognize that as part of the Prologue of the Gospel of John, specifically the part that mentions John the Baptist. Nothing heretical in this sermon, just lots of wrongness. It’s a good case study in how not to divide the word of truth:

  • The 400 Years of Silence
  • John the Baptist finally brings hope and color to the world
  • 3 Things that anyone can do to give yourself hope
  • “The True Light” means whatever you want it to mean
  • How then shall we preach?

Negan’s Choice: Season 6 Finale

“And this shall be the plague with which the Lord will strike all the peoples that wage war against Jerusalem: their flesh will rot while they are still standing on their feet, their eyes will rot in their sockets, and their tongues will rot in their mouths.” Zechariah 14:12

Today’s show is dedicated to the simple question of “Who does Negan choose?” during the final moments of the Season 6 Finale.

This is a spoiler-light episode. You will know that certain people survive until the end of Season 6. That may take a little bit of the tension off of the previous episodes, but it’s not a big deal.

  • Results of the poll
  • What the cast and crew have said
  • Wild speculation about Negan’s choice.
  • Definitive proof from the Bible of a zombie apocalypse

Doctrines of Grace – The Atonement

http://freedthinkerpodcast.blogspot.com/2015/11/the-doctrines-of-grace-atonment.html

In this episode we continue our series looking at the Reformed Doctrines of Grace otherwise known as the doctrines of Calvinism. Next time we will be looking at the doctrine known as Limited Atonement so for this episode we are looking at the intent of the atonement. I argue that we cannot understand the EXTENT of the atonement unless we understand the INTENT of the atonement.
